Chinese still sweet for European pork

As China‘s appetite for pork and pigmeat products continues to escalate the world’s top pig genetics suppliers are eager to take advantage of the opportunities that are coming from the communist state as it opens its borders to increased western investment. Its twelve years since Rattlerow Seghers began a Joint Venture pig breeding farm with HEBEI Yufeng Jing An breeding Co. Ltd, located in HEBEI province of China, 250 Km South of Beijing.

During the past 18 months the company has signed further agreements that will ensure a rapid development of a nucleus farm of Rattlerow Seghers group in China that will eventually maintain a genetic program with the capacity of around 400,000 commercial sows until the end of 2014.

But apart from supplying breeding stock, the Chinese pig industry is looking to Europe for knowledge, education/training and new Genetic lines to make rapid improvements to their breeding programmes and management regimes.

“This offers plenty of opportunities to European Genetic Companies to increase the export volume to China. The production of pork in China cannot keep up with the increasing demand with soaring pork prices at over £2/kg as a result," says Stefan Derks, Co-CEO, Rattlerow Seghers.

“Thanks to our efforts during the past 15 years, and our presence in 28 of the 32 Chinese provinces, Rattlerow Seghers has an established reputation for performance. Our partnership is recognised as one of the few national breeding companies which can obtain import licenses and we look forward to working more closely with the Chinese in the future,” added Mr Derks.

The longstanding JV agreements mean that both Chinese and European partners have given their solid commitment to support the new Chinese industrial producers and improve production for the growing demand of high quality pork products. Rattlerow Seghers continues to play and active role in the genetic programme and a dedicated team manages the nucleus farm in HEBEI province. Every month nucleus data is sent to RS central office in Belgium to calculate indexes and BLUP values and establish the best means of running the breeding program.

With support of the most advanced European technologies and expertise of trained local specialists, Rattlerow Seghers breeding program has maintained a solid reputation for producing high quality carcases - some of the best available in the Chinese market.

During 2011 around 70,000 breeding animals were produced within the Rattlerow Seghers breeding program and sold throughout China. This figure is expected to grow rapidly in the next few years with the current increased nucleus of program now operating by Rattlerow Seghers in China.
